A Golden Hour Engagement Session at Barnegat Lighthouse, Long Beach Island, NJ

There are a handful of places along the Jersey Shore that feel made for love stories, and Barnegat Lighthouse State Park at the northern tip of Long Beach Island is one of them. The iconic red-and-white lighthouse rising against the sky, the wide stretch of rocky shoreline, the way the late afternoon light turns everything golden, it is, simply put, one of our favorite places to photograph an engaged couple. And when Katy & Mark asked us to capture their engagement session here, we knew it was going to be something special.

They had spent summers on LBI for years. The island is their place, a backdrop woven into their relationship from the very beginning. They met as kids on the these beaches and fell in love here. Choosing Barnegat Lighthouse for their engagement session felt natural, meaningful, and entirely them. That connection to a place always makes for the most authentic portraits, and this session was no exception.

We arrived as the light was beginning to soften, that sweet spot when the sun dips toward the horizon and everything glows. The lighthouse grounds at Barnegat Light State Park offer so much variety, the rocky jetty, the salty paths, and of course, the lighthouse itself as a dramatic backdrop. We moved through each of these spots naturally, letting the couple lead with their energy and ease.

What always strikes us about shooting engagement sessions at Barnegat Lighthouse is how relaxed couples feel here. There’s something about being on the island, close to the water, away from everything, it strips away the self-consciousness that can come with being in front of a camera. They weren’t performing for us. They were simply together, in a place they love, and we were there to document it.

As the sun dropped lower, the light turned deeply golden and warm. The jetty became a stage. The lighthouse glowed. The sky shifted through shades of amber and pink. We made portraits that felt timeless and effortless, the kind that will hang on walls and live in frames for decades.
